'Critics are reptiles.' Discuss.Writing about Writing

Here, in a vaguely organised format, are many of the critical pieces I've written since 1992. The Reviews are formal reviews, almost exclusively of science fiction novels, for a variety of publications: the Recommendations are more subjective pieces, mainly written for the APA Acnestis, about books that I've especially enjoyed.

NB: As of January 2002 I've removed the amazon uk links for individual books. You are probably quite capable of finding the books yourself, online or in a real shop: maintaining the links isn't really a cost-effective exercise.

Reviews

and

Recommendations

The reviews (except where otherwise noted) have appeared in Vector, the critical journal of the British Science Fiction Association (BSFA) , since 1992. In retrospect, some seem uncomfortably naive, and there are a couple which remind me that my tastes have changed over the years ... for example, I'm now a devoted admirer of Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan saga, but ... ahem.

I'd also like to press a few recommended novels - not all science fiction - into your eager hands. (I do this in what we laughingly term 'real life', too). The Recommendations are less formal pieces, written in response to books which I've especially enjoyed: these appeared in the APA Acnestis. Some of them may contain minor spoilers.

Update: I'm not writing many formal reviews any more, but I am producing capsule reviews on my LiveJournal.
